Military and business leadership: things in common or what businessmen and servicemen can learn from each other

They seem to be completely different, but at the same time, they have some things in common. So, what do the military and business leaders share? What can they learn from each other? We would like to invite you to the presentation of the results of the study entitled “The role of leader’s character in moderation of the negative relation between leadership context hostility and leader subjective wellbeing” carried out by the Center for Leadership of UCU. The event will be held in the discussion format on September 11 within the UCU Days.

The cross-cutting topics for the discussion will be:

• Leadership and organizational development — what leaders of Ukrainian organizations should know.
• What civil leaders can learn from the military ones and vice versa.
• Leader’s personal wellbeing — why it is important, especially now.

The discussion will be led by the following participants:

• Nataliia Kalmykova, Adviser to the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on gender issues, holder of Master’s degree in Public Administration, former deputy director of the “Come Back Alive” foundation.
• Serhii Sobko, Colonel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Commander of the 128th Separate Mountain Assault Brigade, Hero of Ukraine.
• Serhii Lesniak, translator, co-founder of the “Aistra” company

Andrew Rozhdestvensky, CEO of the Center for Leadership of UCU, will moderate this discussion.

In 2019, the Center for Leadership of UCU completed the joint Ukrainian-Canadian study entitled “The role of leader’s character in moderation of the negative relation between leadership context hostility and leader subjective wellbeing.” The study consisted of two stages, each lasting approximately one year. The aim was (1) to define the virtues of character military leaders possess and compare them to the ones of the business leaders; (2) to study the correlation between leadership and personal wellbeing.
