1000 Days of Ukrainian Leadership

“Once they said about us: ‘They’ll last from three days to a few weeks.’ That was 1000 days ago. The countdown of this great war is not just about daily changes in statistics but the transformations in the lives of every Ukrainian family—especially in those with loved ones who sacrificed their lives or are actively defending the country. The actions of these individuals represent a conscious choice of the hardest path. Their sense of responsibility is an example to follow in every sphere.

We never intended for the term service in our community to take on new, camouflage-colored meanings. On the other hand, it is the greatest testimony of how people grow at UCU, the values they uphold, and the virtues they develop,”
said Sofia Opatska.

This year, the Ukrainian Catholic University welcomed its largest intake of students. Despite 30% of high school graduates planning to move abroad, the interest in higher education provided by UCU is at an all-time high since the institution’s establishment.

“To give young people the chance to live out their most vibrant years and study in Ukraine—that is our mission. We are not only expanding degree programs but also certificate courses and online learning. This strengthens our connection with those currently outside Ukraine. At the same time, this is the same year in which we’ve experienced devastating losses within our community, and that pain is deeply felt,” adds Sofia Opatska.

In this article, we share some statistics that vividly illustrate how deeply and directly our community is involved in defending the country, despite the academic challenges and responsibilities we bear. The focus remains where true leaders stand every day—on the front lines, protecting their nation.

Every achievement of our Leadership Center and UCU as a whole is a gesture of gratitude to those who defend us today, in memory of those who gave their lives for this cause, and as a testament to standing strong against the enemy’s efforts. The future is a shared effort by each of us.
