Case Study of Crisis Leadership by Gerard Seijts

We’ve all observed a flock of birds at least once, but have we ever stopped to wonder why they move the way they do?

During a recent webinar, Gerard Seijts captivated participants by playing a video of birds in flight, projecting the screen for all to see, and then continued with an insightful analysis:

“Birds follow three simple rules:

  1. Fly at the same speed.
  2. Stay close to your neighbor.
  3. Change direction if you notice a predator.”

Seijts highlighted the dual role birds play as both leaders and followers, drawing parallels to crisis situations. He emphasized that during times of uncertainty, it’s impossible to predict every eventuality or make decisions for everyone. However, he stressed the importance of teams being capable of rapid adaptation. This requires each team member to act as a sensor for external changes and opportunities, promptly and effectively informing others of potential dangers of chances.

Seijts pointed out that threats necessitating an immediate change in direction can arise from any source, making it unpredictable who from the team will signal the need for action.

“Therefore, he emphasized the necessity for communication to be active, transparent, and trustworthy.”

This was just one of numerous examples of crisis leadership and resilience that Gerard Seijts presented during the webinar held on April 10.

Gerard Seijts serves as the CEO of the Ian O. IhnatowyczInstitute for Leadership at Ivey Business School, where he actively conducts research, publishes scientific articles, and holds a PhD from the University of Toronto. He is a recipient of awards for research, innovation in education, and public engagement, and teaches in Executive MBA, MBA, and other master’s programs.

Additionally, he is the author and co-author of 5 books, including:
• Leadership on Trial: A Manifesto for Leadership Development;
• Good Leaders Learn: Lessons from Lifetimes of Leadership;
• Developing Leadership Character;
• Leadership in Practice: Theory and Cases in Leadership Character;
• The Character Compass: Transforming Leadership for the 21st Century.

“I think we can all agree that the chaotic world we live in today won’t become peaceful anytime soon,” remarked Gerard, motivating leaders not to wait for changes but to respond to challenges through value-based leadership.”

Throughout the webinar, Seijts shared examples of companies that faced setbacks, detailing how their leaders acted and suggesting response algorithms suitable for crisis situations.

He also addressed external threats, discussing the importance of leaders being visible and their role in decision-making processes.

Drawing upon real-life cases and quoting executives and colleagues from the academic community, Seijts concluded by explaining the model of virtues and how individuals can develop the resilience necessary to navigate uncertain times and emerge as effective leaders.

We extend sincere gratitude to Gerard Seijts and Ivey Business School for their invaluable contributions to leadership development in Ukraine. We also extend our thanks to the event partner, the innovative center Promprylad.
