Business as a military strategy – what can businesses learn from the military?

On July 5-6, Lviv Business School of UCU implemented the fourth Business as a Military Strategy program for managers. The training was based on a new format for business education – through acquaintance with historical events and drawing analogies to modern business strategies. Trainers of the program were Serhii Lesniak, Vadym Zadunaiskyi and the CEO of the UCU Center for Leadership Andrii Rozhdestvenskyi.

“Studying military strategies develops strategic thinking; it is like a chess game which simply makes you think and make decisions,” Andrii Rozhestvenskyi commented. The participants dealt not only with military strategies, but also analyzed the leadership qualities of some historical figures, such as Petro Sahaidachnyi and Bohdan Khmelnytskyi.

Business futurist Adrian Slywotzky who twice was on the list of the world’s top 25 business consultants, has also become a participant of the program: “Strategies are extremely important for business. Obviously, much can be learned from business history, but military strategies imply more strategic thinking and strategic adaptation. There are many similarities between business strategy and military strategy: problem selection, speed, agility, cunning, pre-action analysis. More than 50% of what you learn from Sun Ji, Napoleon and others may be directly adapted to strategic decisions of your business.”
